Mosaic temple in Thailand
The largest mosaic temple in Asia was built in Thailand
Four floors with a height of 42 meters, more than 20 million ceramic tiles with a total weight of more than 180 tons. And a three-year work of 200 masters. All this – about the largest mosaic temple in Asia Thep Wittayakom Vihara, built in Thailand, the province of Nakhanratchasima in the territory of the temple complex Wat Baan Rai.
The initiative to create this temple proceeded from the respected monk Phra Thep Wittayarom, whose name the temple was named. The main architect and designer of the structure was Samphan Sararak. The main task of this unique temple structure is to bring Buddhist teachings to people in the understandable language of architecture, sculpture and painting. When decorating the temple, moments and scenes taken from the holy Buddhist scripture of the Tripitaka were used, which literally translates as “three baskets”.
The grandiose temple is made in the form of a huge elephant with tusks and decorated with a mosaic of millions of ceramic tiles. All elements of the temple – columns, walls, arches, sculptures – were hand-decorated with the participation of famous Asian masters and ordinary people. All mosaic scenes have a complex pattern with many small details. That is why the decoration of the temple construction took three years of painstaking work.
At present, the Temple of The Wittayakom Vihara is considered to be the largest mosaic temple in Asia. In addition, this temple is also a religious, educational and grandiose art object, rightly being an amazing sight in Thailand.
